Software Engineer & Database Administrator

Located in Philadelphia, Independence Media has transformed a traditional non-commercial television operation into a new multi-platform media company. The new operation includes analog and television broadcast/cablecast on the current WYBE Channel 35 (NTSC) / Channel 34 (DT), 24/7 IPTV (video streaming), and an internet VOD system. The local broadcast signal reaches 6 million viewers in 12 counties (17 counties in 2009); the internet operation provides global service. Our first new brand is MiND: Media Independence, a TV + internet operation built from 5-minute programs (many viewer-generated), and based upon an IT infrastructure more closely aligned with newer internet distribution technologies than with traditional television operations.

This is a hands-on position will include custom designed internal and external software application that service MiND Media Independence. As we grow this unique individual will plan and implement the staff functionality and the external member features.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Databases: Administration, management, maintenance, upgrades to all existing databases
    • Filemaker, MIP (accounting), Raiser’s Edge (fund-raising); Protrack (broadcast scheduling)
  • Software: development, implementation, and testing of enhancements to all databases (in particular, MiND Control, our custom content management system,)
    • Expertise in variety of database and web languages and protocols, including but not limited to SQL, php, pearl, java, html (css)
  • Websites: Programming and all updates to mindtv.org, IndependenceMedia.org and increasing range of websites with varying degrees of complexity and features.
  • Development of new, or more fully integrated, databases, application software, tools, enhancements, etc.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five (5) years in software development with emphasis on database programming/administration, web programming, and the integration of these and other services
  • Planning and implementation; ease in working across departments, and with clients and outside services
  • Past role in start-ups, or similarly complex organizations
  • B.A. or B.S. required
